There is a bill in both the House and Senate committees right now that if passed could provide hope to many couples who are using medical assistance to become parents. It is called The Family Building Act, and it would require insurance companies to provide coverage for many advanced infertility treatments. Included in the bill is coverage for IVF, which is a viable option for many infertile couples.
A representative from the National Infertility Association supports the bill because she believes that infertility is a disease. And because of that, should be supported by the insurance companies in the same way that other diseases are.
As you can imagine, the insurance industry is set against the bill, claiming that the costs would be outrageous.
Interestingly, only 14 states currently have insurance companies who offer infertility coverage as an option.
