Pregnancy Test Sensitivity and Early-Detection Testing

Early Pregnancy Tests: How Soon Can I Test for Pregnancy?

HCG pregnancy tests determine pregnancy through the detection of the hormone hCG (Human Chorionic Gonadotropin) in a woman's urine. In technical terms, hCG is a glycoprotein hormone secreted by the developing placenta shortly after a fertilized egg has implanted in the uterine lining.

Clinically speaking, HCG is measured in thousandths of International Units, or mIU. Pregnancy tests with a sensitivity of 20 mIU/ml are more sensitive than tests with 50 to 100 mIU/ml. Test brands will display how sensitive their tests are using mIU as the standard unit of measure. Test sensitivity equates with early-detection - and the lower the number, the sooner a test can detect pregnancy. The most sensitive pregnancy tests can detect hCG levels at as low as 20 mIU - or at around 8 days following implantation of the egg.

Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com is one of the first Internet providers of FDA approved early home pregnancy tests. Tests are affordable, generic, come individually sealed with expiration dates extending two years. Early-Pregnancy-Tests.com also maintains a user-generated photo gallery of positive pregnancy test images.

How Soon Can I Test?

If a woman is pregnant, the amount of hCG in her system should be around 25 mIU at 10 dpo (days past ovulation), 50 mIU at 12 dpo, 100 mIU at around two weeks dpo. Blood tests can determine pregnancy as low as between 5 to 10 mIU/hCG, though with levels of 5 mIU, a conclusive determination cannot be made without risking a "false positive" (as low levels hCG can be present in the body without pregnancy).

Drugstore pregnancy tests generally detect pregnancy at 50 mIU - 100 mIU hCG, though you can find early-detection pregnancy tests on the Internet with sensitivity levels as low as 20 mIU. With all diagnostic products, take care to follow the instructions. Please consult the chart below for a comparison of pregnancy tests:

For earliest detection of pregnancy, use first morning urine, as this sample contains the most concentrated amount of hCG. If using first morning urine is not possible, avoiding urination for several hours before using a pregnancy test. Frequent urination - or a diluted sample - can decrease the amount of hCG in your urine, interfering with early-detection.

What does a faint line on a pregnancy test mean?

On a pregnancy test, a faint test line - or color band - is usually indicative of a positive result, as long as it's read within the allotted time frame - or reaction time of the test (usually at 5-10 minutes). If you do the pregnancy test properly and read it within the recommended time, then a faint and weak line is very likely a positive pregnancy test. Explanations for a faint positive line include:

  • You may be testing too early after conception - the hCG in your body may not be at a sufficient level for test detection. hCG doubles every two days, so wait and test again using first morning urine.
  • Different test sensitivity. As tests detect hCG at different levels, a faint line on one variety of test may appear as a stronger line on a 20 mIU test.
  • Urine dilution. Your urine may be diluted due to frequent urination or consumption of liquids. First morning urine is recommended for pregnancy testing as it contains the most concentrated presence of hCG.
  • Chemical pregnancy. Sometimes, an early pregnancy is detected - followed by negative test results. A chemical pregnancy means implantation takes place followed by a miscarriage - usually before any other pregnancy symptoms are detected.

I am 3 days from having a missed period... I took the Equate Pregnancy Tests, the one that comes with 3 in the box. Ok anyway. I took three yesterday evening all were a faint positive... Then woke up this morning to get my husband off to work and took the other three.... The plus sign in the first circle was still faint but you could definetly see it... Is it all in my head or am i really pregnant... because the first day of my last period was Jul 25th. So Am I pregant?!

I had unprotected sex on august 1st I haven't had sex since then. I am usually irregular on my period and I haven't started since my last one ended on June 30th. I've tested several times. I figures if I had got pregnant in July it would show by now. But I'm worried about the august 1st time. He didn't cum in me but I did feel like I was ovulating the day after. I haven't had any signs of period an the only sign I've had is heartburn for the last three days. I tested this morning and it said negative. Today would be the 18th day after my assumed ovulation. Would it show up by now?

The guy that I am with and I have been having sex almost daily since July 12 of this year. On August 13 I tested positive for a pregnancy test. (4 of them to be exact) I had 2 cycles in July one from July 6-12 and the other July 29-August 4. Now this places my date of conception on August 12. I tested positive on Ausust 13. Can anybody help me figure out when my baby is due and when I concieved?

i had a positive result on saturday and by sunday i had a negative result and today i have started my period was i pregnant or did i have a faulty test?

Hi, Im Turning 33 soon, and i last gave birth to my daughter 9 yrs ago. I used contaceptive, (implanol for 7 mths and change to IUCD for 3yrs). I had this problem,(can't remember if it was during or after my IUCD), i had bleeding for 15days, at first sight i thought it was my normal menstruation. Went to the Doctor, took some medication, but i stopped it. And it went away just like that, and i return to having my normal menstruation (monthly). Recently, I had my menses on the 3rd of july 2010 till 10th of july 2010. and another cycle on the 3rd of August 2010 but for only 3 days. I have these on going bloatedness, at certain days i kinda have constipation, nauseu, vomitting, slight abdominal cramps/pain. i have check with the pregnancy test kit but it turn out negative. my questions are, is it too early to detect/check? am i pregnant? why does my period come for 3days only(never happened before)? Am i able to get pregnant again after 9 yrs of not having another baby? i really need to find out to all these questions. Am trying to get pregnant again. thank you

Prior to you guys getting back together, how long ago did you have sex with her, it all depends on dates. If you have not had sex with her for over 3 weeks or 2weeks then it probably is not from you unless she got pregnant with you before you broke up. how long were you broken up for?

This is the second time i missed my period this year, i may be pregnant but not 100% sure, test did have a faint line not another test showed negative. could i be going through menapause this early? any boy have comments

My fiancée recently stepped out with another guy. We hot back together July 4th and tested positive July 8th is it possible to test positive four days after sex? Or is this baby more than likely the other guys that she was with the 23rd through July3rd?

I had a tubal recanalization in May to open both of my tubes and it was succesful. I came on my cycle on July 4th and today is August 5th no sign of cycle yet. I went to the Dollar store to get a few Preg tests and immediately tested. I only took one at about 5pm and I got a very very faint positive. I don't know if that was an evaporation line or the real test or even if my mind is playing tricks on me. Well I am glad to hear that I am not the only one TTC and now I don't feel so bad. I want a baby so so bad and it feels like it is taking too long. I am 29 years old and have no children at the moment but I am truely ready. What do yall think about a very faint positive? I will test again using my first morning urine to see a better result. Baby dust to all of us. GOOD LUCK ladies. Let's keep in touch!
