I was looking at our insurance policy to see what (if anything) is covered under infertility treatments and found that nothing is covered.
I was wondering for those of you who have had your DH's sperm analyized and have taken chlomid or hormone shots (or anything else) if your insurance covered any of that or if you had to pay out of pocket for everything.  I have emailed my insurance company (BCBSKC) to see if anything at all was covered.
I know this is only our 5th try, but I am just researching just for future reference if needed.
Any imput would be appreciated!! Smile :)

hey Wannabeamom. i've never had to take chlomid but i do know that unless you have maternity on that type of insurance company you will have a waiting period plus pay your deductible. insurance companies are picky when it comes to that stuff. you may have to call them directly speak to someone like a supervisor that way you have all the info you want. take notes down and go over things with them before you hang up. or you cud write down all the questions that you have and ask them one by one. hope you get the answers you need. i'll see what i can find out too

I spoke with my MD about it and she pretty much told me that nothing is covered! I think that is one of the reasons she suggested we keep trying on our own.

Ah, yes...the good old insurance companies who still think it's more cost effective to treat the sick than it is to maintain the healthy!

Yeah, no kidding Kim! I just got a notice from our insurance company (we pay completely out of our own pockets for our premiums because my hubby is essentially self-employed), that in 2010, our insurance premiums are increasing by $131 a month!!! (That puts them within $100 of our truck payment!) I'm already starting to look at the budget to see where we'll have to cut back....with 3+ kids, we can't afford to be without insurance! UGH!

I just checked mine and there are a lot of services covered, but the assisted fertility is not covered....so that doesn't make sense. I guess testing is covered, but essentially the end goal of conceiving if you are infertile isn't going to be covered. It's like giving you 2 licks of an ice cream cone and then saying 'if you want the rest, that will be $10,000 please!'

I used to really rip health insurance up and down when I would talk about it, but then I stopped. One of my employees had to have an emergency appendectomy when he was unemployed and came out of it with a $40k bill.
So I vowed to remain of the mindset that health insurance, even though we pay sometimes large amounts, is worth it over no health insurance. AND I started utilizing it more when I realized I could have been all along. I definitely see my gyne every year, and if I suspect there's something physically wrong with me, I go to the doc. That's how I ended up having my gall bladder out. I kept thinking there was something wrong with my heart and after they did so many tests, they found out that my chest pain was being caused by my GB, which was working at 6% capacity!! Luckily I had it out with a laproscopic procedure (instead of the emergency procedure that will leave a 4" scar) and I never saw a bill. Ever. Insurance covered it all. Even an overnight stay in the hospital. SO I would say I got my money's worth just from that Smile
I will say there are ups and downs and some are worse/better than others. I guess it's a matter of who you have and how much it costs.

Lisa,
Yeah, I agree...with 5 (and soon-to-be 6) of us, we definitely get our $$$'s worth from our insurance, it's just when the premiums keep going up every year, but the benefits (and our income) don't, it's hard to swallow. A necessary evil. Puzzled

Thanks for all your comments!! I really appreciate it. Like everyone else I am hoping that we don't have to do all that stuff, but you never know and I would rather be prepared. I'll just start saving for whatever we may have to do and then hopefully if we don't need to use the money for that we can take a vacation!! I'm thinking Hawaii!! Smile

Insurance stuff drives me crazy, but I would rather deal with stuff than not have it. We are very fortunate to have excellent insurance and I am so thankful for that. Working in a hospital I see first hand those struggling with their hospital bills and I could not imagine having to deal with that.
