Facebook and Apple Offer $20,000 for Family Planning!

Did you hear what Apple and Facebook have just committed to?  Both of these companies have pledged to give up to $20,000 to their employees to help pay for infertility treatments, sperm donors and/or egg freezing services.

Their hope is that professional women will start to feel as if they don’t have to choose between a career and a family.  It is a move that the CEOs are hoping will start to balance out the number of men and women employed with their companies.  There are other big companies that provide insurance plans for infertility related issues, but to include egg freezing as one of the options is one of the firsts of its kind.

What do you think about this offer?

On one hand, I think it is wonderful that the companies are interested and committed to women’s health and are encouraging them to plan for their future family.  On the other hand, I worry about the message that young women will be receiving.  Does it offer them a false sense of hope and security?  Just because the services are available does not guarantee that their bodies will be fertile and healthy later in life.

Are any of you employed by either Apple or Facebook?  If so, do you think you will take part in this family planning program?  I would love to hear your thoughts!
