Does anyone else's little one strain and grunt 24/7? My boy is not constipated, poops and pees regularly, but is always trying to get something out. He does it so much, he gave himself an umbilical hernia. Hopefully, he will stop and it will heal itself, otherwise he's in for surgery in a couple of years. I've tried giving gas drops, gripe water, massage, etc but nothing helps. He looks so miserable. It's heartbreaking.

Poor little Andreas. Aubrey makes grunting noises sometimes but it's not constant. I would ask the pediatrician and I'm curious what he/she says. I've been thinking about trying the gripe water to help Aubrey's hiccups. She gets them all the time and it wakes her up and she cries. I was wondering if anyone else had any luck with it or if it's just a waste of $.

Went to see ped (she was on vacation at last visit, saw someone else) yesterday as his hernia is getting bigger and Andreas is not getting better. She surmised he has GER. She thinks the constant straining is his way of managing pain. I didn't think of reflux because he doesn't spit up/vomit and is BF. But he has alot of the other symptoms (hiccups, arching back, etc). She put him on Zantac and we're going for an sonogram. He hates the Zantac. It's bitter mint flavored. Pure torture for a little one used to BM. I"m taking it back today to get it flavored. So far, we haven't seen any improvment but he's only had two doses. I'll keep you posted. BTW, we just survived his growth spurt. It was hell for me, constant feeding, whining, and sleeplessness. I was worried my BM wouldn't be able to keep up. He gained almost TWO LBS in 11 days!!!! Whew! Last week was really rough in our house with the all the straining and growing. Glad that's behind us....I hope.

BTW, mylicon drops and gripe water didn't work for us. But again, we thought we were trying to treat gas but it was reflux.

The gripe water seems to help Olivia with her hiccups, but we don't give it to her that often, but when we do use it, I think it helped.

Dana, I'm glad the BF worked out for you guys. It does get so much easier once you get the hang of it. I still have somewhat sore nipples and it hurts a bit when she initially latches but I don't dread every feeding anymore.

I wonder if Aubrey has the same thing. I've had GER myself and took Zantac the entire pregnancy and now she gets fussy and gets the hiccups often. I think I tend to overfeed her at times because when she cries I offer her the breast and she almost always takes it and she has started spitting up a little at night. She also grunts a lot when I lay her flat. Hmm... i'll have to talk to my pedi next time too. Thanks for sharing this.

My DS had reflux. We did have him on Zantac, but we just put it in a bottle with a little milk. It went down a lot easier. Another trick is take a bottle nipple and put the meds in it and let him/her just suck the meds out.

If you ever have a problem with constipation try dark karo syrup. We usually put about 1/4 tsp in with 4 oz of milk. It usually got him going!!!
