The Ultimate PCOS Handbook- Book Review

I just finished reading the book, The Ultimate PCOS Handbook, by Colette Harris and Theresa Cheung.

If you want to know more about PCOS (Polycystic Ovary Syndrome), have just been diagnosed with PCOS, or are thinking you might be suffering from PCOS, this is a great resource!!!!

The authors do a great job explaining about PCOS and what it looks like and feels like at each stage of a woman’s life. It also gives a clear symptom list so that you can easily discern if you need to contact your doctor to discuss possible PCOS.

But what I loved best was the second section of the book, which is an action plan for dealing with PCOS. It is a straightforward and easy to understand 10 step plan that gives you very specific ideas for helping with each of the PCOS symptoms. Each step is broken into 3 parts:

1. (The what) An overview of action plan step
2. (The why) Why the step is important in conquering PCOS
3. (The how) A VERY detailed step by step plan

For example:
The first step in the plan is to eat more often.
Try not to go more than 3-4 hours without eating. Try not to skip meals or overeat at other times during the day.

Why? If you skip meals, your body thinks it is starving and it holds onto all the calories possible. This goofs up your metabolism and your body begins to store fat. When you go long periods of time without eating, your blood sugar levels also drop and you tend to crave and eat sweets. These sweet foods mess up your insulin resistance levels………which is one of symptoms of PCOS.

How? The book gives you an extensive list of healthy snack options such as yogurt topped with seeds and nuts, or crisp vegetables dipped in a peanut dipping sauce.

Other parts of the action plan involve specific PCOS exercises, how to detox your body to make it more fertility friendly, balancing your hormones with the best nutritional and herbal supplements, natural therapy options, fertility boosting secrets, and how to make the plan specific enough to meet your individual needs.

The book gives proactive ideas that make you feel hopeful that you will get your PCOS under control and become pregnant!

I also liked that the book was organized in a very easy to follow format with a gentle on the eyes font. :)

I would definitely recommend this book if you are interested in finding out more about PCOS for any reason. You can order it from your local bookstore or check it out from the library like I did! :)
