PCOS Diet


I have been reading a great book called, The Ultimate PCOS Handbook, by Colette Harris and Theresa Cheung. One of the sections discusses the importance of diet and lifestyle if you are suffering from PCOS. The authors recommend 10 diet rules to follow that will make sure your body is fertility friendly!

Rule #1 Eat frequently
It is best to eat a healthy snack every 4 hours or so. This way the body is not starving itself for long periods of time. If this happens, your blood sugar levels drop and the body holds onto the fat. A body that thinks it is starving also tends to make you crave sweets, which is not good for your insulin levels.

Rule #2 Choose whole foods
When you opt for whole foods, you are eliminating additives such as artificial flavorings, colorings and preservatives from your diet. A diet rich in whole foods is also high in fiber which prevents extra estrogen from being absorbed into the blood. And if that isn’t enough, it also helps maintain a healthy insulin level.

Rule #3 Watch your sugar
Sugar is tied to weight gain and triggers PCOS symptoms. It is best to stay away from that piece of chocolate cake or candy.

Rule #4 Pay attention to the glycemic index
When you use the glycemic index to evaluate your food each day, you are better able to balance your sugar levels. This is key if you are suffering from PCOS.

Rule #5 Drink water
Drinking enough water is critical for keeping your hormone levels balanced.

Rule #6 Skip the salt
When you are reaching to season your food, choose herbs instead of the salt.

Rule #7 Select good fats
Staying away from the bad fats such as those found in red meats and dairy products keep your digestive, immune and hormone systems working properly.

Rule #8 Watch your protein
Proteins are key to keeping your blood sugar levels balanced. For optimal health, he authors of, The Ultimate PCOS Handbook, recommend a diet that is made up of 20-25 percent protein.

Rule #9 Antioxidants
Vitamins and minerals are essential for women with PCOS. The best way to get the vitamins and minerals is naturally, by eating plenty of fruits and veggies!

Rule #10 Phytoestrogens
Again, an important way to keep your hormones balanced is by the intake of phytoestrogens. These can be found in leafy veggies, broccoli, cabbage cauliflower, soy, beans and lentils.

If you follow these diet suggestions, the authors believe that your PCOS will be kept in check and your body will be fertility ready!!!!!!!!!!!!!
