Fertility Foods- Optimize Ovulation and Conception Through Food Choices

Fertility Foods is written by Jeremy Groll, who is a fertility doctor and research scientist.  His plan involves improving insulin sensitivity through diet and exercise. He also believes that even if you are taking fertility medications or using other fertility assisted procedures, that his plan will help increase your chances of a successful pregnancy.

So what is his plan you may ask???

1.   Optimize your insulin secretion by limiting (not eliminating)
             carbohydrates.
2.   Balancing protein with complex carbohydrates in your diet.
3.   Eliminate starchy carbohydrates.
4.   Spacing meals so that you are eating 5 times a day
5.   Exercising for at least 30 minutes 5 times a week.
6.   Setting goals for yourself.
7.   Identifying an emotional support system to lean on during the
             process.
8.   Use medical intervention when necessary.

The book gives your food guides of all sorts. Included is list that equates carbohydrates to their value on the high glycemic-index. Even if you are not trying to become pregnant, this guide would be helpful in maintaining a healthy diet.

Also, there is an example of a seven day meal plan that would be “fertility friendly.”  You will find recipes for foods such as grilled pork tenderloin, spinach frittata and Dr. Groll's famous oatmeal.

All in all, this was an interesting book to read.  It helped me to really understand how food can impact your insulin levels and how to remedy a diet that is not balanced.  I also liked the sample week of fertility friendly foods.  The recipes used pretty common ingredients and required minimal prep times.  If you are looking at a way to jump into a healthier lifestyle, this book gives a pretty straight forward plan.

So……………. I would recommend this book because of its straight forward plan, simple description of how the diet works and the user friendly 7 day meal plan.

Happy reading!

I bought this book after trying to concieve for a year, and after following his advice (though not his exact diet) I lost ten pounds and finally got pregnant. Unfortunately I ended up having a miscarriage at 6 1/2 weeks and went on a bit of a "comfort food" binge. Trying to get back on the wagon again, though, and I'm definitely using this book. He has a couple of recipes that I really like, they pretty much all have really simple ingredients and instructions, and the whole book is very easy to read and understand. I give it two thumbs up!
