DNA Times 3

A controversial study has been completed successfully by scientists from Newcastle University in the UK. They developed human embryos using the DNA from multiple people, 3 to be exact. In addition to a married couple, the mitochondrial DNA from another woman was also used.

Their motivation in doing such a procedure was to try to replace unhealthy genes with the healthy ones of a donor. When the cells that are regulated by the mitochondrial DNA do not function properly, many diseases occur: muscular and myopathy dystrophy, diabetes, stroke, blindness, deafness, liver failure, epilepsy various other neurological problems.

The scientists say that they are not trying to alter genes, but just create healthy embryos.
