A newborn baby boy has recently made it into the world records book.  He holds the distinction of being born after spending the longest time in suspended cooler storage in his embryo state.

After 20 years in cryopreservation, an embyo donated by an anonymous donor was implanted into a 42 year old women who had been struggling with infertility.  She gave birth to a healthy baby boy a few months ago.

Until now, the record for oldest suspended cooler storage embryo successfully ending in a healthy baby was 13 years.

This definitely gives a lot of hope to women who are needing to make decisions about the future and their ability to become pregnant and carry a baby to term.  Fertility specialists say that cryopreservation is becoming a more common option for women facing cancer and chemotherapy.  In fact, the latest statistics show that there are actually 500,000 cooler stored embryos in the US right now.

All of these medical advances definitely change the list of fertility options  for women.  It is hard to even imagine what new treatments will be available 20, 50 or even 100 years from now!
