At a fertility conference in Brisbane today, a study was presented that links cell phone use and sperm damage.
In their study, researchers at the University of Newcastle found that when men were exposed to radiation that was similar to that of a mobile phone for 16 hours, there was definite sperm damage. In fact, researchers have found that men who use a cell phone for long periods of time have 40 percent lower sperm counts than those who rarely use their phones.
The damage that occurs is to the DNA of the sperm. This is concerning because for the man, the fragmentation of the sperm has been linked to struggles with fertility. Even more concerning is that if the man fathers a child, the little one has a greater chance of developing childhood cancer, autism, bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Researchers do admit that this research is very early in its stages and look forward to further studies to find out more!
