If you are working with your fertility doctor to help you conceive, you are probably getting your blood drawn each month. One of the things that they are measuring is your prolactin level. Have you ever wondered what prolactin actually is?
Prolactin is a hormone that is produced by the pituitary gland. It is mainly responsible for your milk production after having a baby. However, it also impacts menstruation and ovulation. Infertility can sometimes be blamed on having too much prolactin in the blood. When this happens, two other hormones called FSH and GnRH become inhibited and ovulation doesn’t occur.
This is the why your prolactin levels are tested if you are exploring reasons for infertility!
